Another look back at LEGOLAND Mythica—one of our projects with Merlin Magic Making completed in Spring 2021. A challenging build with some interesting problem-solving along the way!

I’ve always loved the design of the obelisks, and I’m especially proud of how the LEGO-to-rock transitions turned out. Even better, like I said in the last post, it’s still looking like the day we left it.

We recently returned to update some carved signage—always a pleasure to revisit past work!

Revisiting Mythica at LEGOLAND

It’s always rewarding to return to past projects, and Mythica at Legoland was no exception. This time, we were back to create new carved concrete signage. The sun made a brief appearance—just enough for me to capture a quick video of the portal.

Back in the winter of 2020/21, the brilliant team at Merlin Magic Making brought us in to help shape this unique world, using our concrete spraying, carving, and painting expertise. The project came with its challenges—freezing temperatures and a global pandemic among them—but also some exciting creative puzzles, like figuring out how to blend LEGO with rockwork.

It was great to see Mythica evolve and a few years later, still looking like the day we left it.

Full size T-rex Skull - A few years ago, we produced some fossils for ‘Andy’s Adventures Dinosaur Dig’ with Merlin Magic Making at Alton Towers. Rather than sculpt ‘one offs’, Bruce made masters in clay and manufactured a series of re-useable moulds. One of these was this full size T-Rex skull. The first skull for Alton Towers was cast in concrete and then the mould languished behind the scenes at @hamertonzoopark for a number of years. Last week though, it got a new lease of life and we can proudly show casting number two, this time in fibreglass! Here we are working on a cool new dark ride which is due to open this spring at Bottons Pleasure Beach, Skegness.
I reckon we can get about five more ‘pulls’ from this mould, either in concrete or Fibreglass - Maybe limited edition number three could end up at your attraction? Let us know if you could use this beautiful piece of art in your future plans!

Crafting the Kopje Rock: Sculpting Spray Concrete in Action

In this follow-up to our last reel featuring the finished Kopje rock, step behind the scenes with Bruce, Graham, and Jason as they bring this rock to life. Using slowly setting spray concrete, they skillfully carve the intricate details that replicate the unique erosion patterns of African kopjes.

I (Jason) even had to pause my own carving to capture the spectacle on film—it’s not every day you get to witness artistry and teamwork like this 😅

Anti-Climb Kopje Rock: A Natural Solution for Zoo Habitat Design

Kopjes, the iconic rocky outcrops scattered across the African savannah, are as striking as they are functional. With their ancient origins and unique “onion-skin” erosion patterns, these formations offer endless inspiration for sculpting.

By recreating this natural beauty, we not only disguise unsightly block walls but also create an anti-climb surface that blends seamlessly into the habitat. These sculpted kopjes add authenticity and character, turning a practical necessity into an artistic feature that feels straight out of the wild.
